Bush pilots have been flying in Alaska for about 90 years. They have to also be mechanics, to keep their aircraft flying even in remote areas and have even served as missionaries. "For many pilots, their dream job is that of a bush pilot -- the airborne cowboy who must land on gravel bars and slip through mountain passes," wrote Kathy Dondzila in her book, "Alaska: The Ultimate Flight Training Environment."
