A study in the journal PLoS One showed that children with autism had higher levels of gluten antibodies than did those without the condition, indicating a greater likelihood for immune and/or intestinal abnormalities. However, researchers emphasized that the findings do not suggest that a gluten-free diet has any benefit for children with autism. "By itself, the increased antibody response to gluten does not necessarily indicate sensitivity to gluten or any pathogenic [disease-causing] role for the antibodies," lead researcher Armin Alaedini said.
