New York City reached a proposed settlement growing out of a lawsuit filed by federal prosecutors claiming that the calculations of pension benefits for police officers who served in the military after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks were too low. The office of Preet Bharara, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, said pensionable earnings were based only upon salaries, not estimates of overtime and other compensation the police officers would have received.
