Beginning next month, all 3,300 educators in Douglas County, Colo., school district will be placed under a new pay scale in which they receive different compensation depending on the subject and grade they teach. Under the system of supply and demand, teachers are divided into five "salary bands," or brackets, with the hardest-to-fill positions earning the highest salaries. The lowest bracket includes most elementary-school and physical-education teachers, while the highest earners are special-education therapists.
