Summer food programs in Colorado are effective in replacing meals that students received when school was in session -- helping to reduce hunger -- suggests Michelle Ray, spokeswoman for Hunger Free Colorado. This summer, 450 sites in the state will provide free meals to children Monday through Friday and serve meals at a cost to adults. The summer-meal program has grown over the years -- serving 52% more meals since 2009 and adding 50 sites this year.
