A Republican-led plan in the House Appropriations Committee to halve the Department of Energy's budget for renewable energy has drawn criticism from the panel's Democrats. "With global carbon emissions at record highs and extreme weather events caused by global warming happening with increased frequency and deadly force, I see no justification for such drastic cuts to investments in renewable energy that decrease our carbon footprint," said Rep. Nita Lowey, D-N.Y. Democrats also criticized a plan to slash the funding of the Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy program.
