Luxury London department store Harrods has created a mobile-optimized site with features including international shipping options designed to spur global sales growth. "We serve a highly-mobile customer and represent the store’s global window, so it was key to deliver best in class," said director Neil Borer.
Traffic and sales at a Dazhong Electronics store in Beijing and other TV and appliance stores in China slowed dramatically on June 1, after a year-long government subsidy on energy-efficient appliances expired. "If customers don't need those products badly, they won't be willing to pay an additional several hundred yuan. They'd rather wait for the price to drop," said saleswoman Li Haiyan.

UK retail sales rose 2.1% last month after a 1.1% decline in April, beating economists' forecast of a 0.8% increase as food sales and online retail grew at their fastest pace in two years, the Office for National Statistics said Thursday. "A recovery in the U.K. economy may be taking root," said economist Martin Beck. "Retail sales may provide a modest boost to growth in the second quarter."
Online retailer Lazada has received an investment round of $100 million to continue building its business in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, a region where consumers still do about 99% of their shopping offline. Germany's Rocket Internet Gmbh launched Lazada last year, making it one of several e-commerce sites operating in emerging global markets.
