Scientists recently discovered that a fat lump near the dorsal fins of male sea lampreys plays a role in the reproductive process. Sea lampreys, which resemble eels, are an invasive, parasitic species that has devastated the Great Lakes and been implicated in the extinction of three fish species. Researchers hope their findings will pave the way for controlling the sea lamprey population.
