Gartner issued a more pessimistic forecast for revenues from mobile-payment services delivered by near-field communication technology from an average of 42% to 35% noting that consumer adoption has been slower than expected. Gartner says NFC should account for 2% of total mobile payments this year, rising to 5% in 2017. In another report, Berg Insight estimated smartphone owners spent $500 million using mobile-payment applications last year, with most of the revenues coming from the Starbucks app.
