Openly gay Massachusetts state Rep. Carl Sciortino, a Democrat, kicked off his campaign this week to replace U.S. Sen.-elect Ed Markey, a U.S. House Democrat who won a special election Tuesday to fill the Senate seat vacated by Secretary of State John Kerry. Sciortino has the backing of the Victory Fund and the statewide LGBT group MassEquality, and has been hailed by supporters as a champion for progressive causes. "Carl is one, I'd say, of a handful of elected officials for whom I would do pretty much anything -- and I'm not exaggerating," said Marc Solomon, national campaign director for Freedom to Marry.
