A gluten-free diet may help people with celiac disease reduce their risk of early atherosclerosis, according to a small study of 20 adults published in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics. Researchers said normalizing small bowel mucosa through a gluten-free diet appears to be associated with a beneficial effect, but larger studies are needed to better define cardiovascular risk factors and benefits of a gluten-free diet in patients with celiac disease.
