Type 1 diabetes patients on intensive treatment had a 46% reduced risk of retinopathy, a 39% lower risk of microalbuminuria and a 61% lower risk of macroalbuminuria over 18 years than those who received standard care, a study presented at the ADA 73rd Scientific Sessions indicated. Researchers also noted a 39% lower risk of focal laser therapy and a 48% lower risk of any ocular surgery in the intensive treatment group compared with the controls.
