An unprecedented partnership among the Japanese government, universities and the pharmaceutical industry -- along with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation -- has launched a $100 million initiative to develop drugs that will combat diseases plaguing some of the poorest nations in the world. The Global Health Innovative Technology Fund will begin by supporting three other global nonprofits that are targeting tuberculosis, malaria and such neglected diseases including leishmaniasis, Chagas disease and sleeping sickness.
