St. Tammany Parish, La., has joined a coalition to oppose the Biggert-Waters Act and flood maps proposed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, parish President Pat Brister told the Slidell City Council. The coalition includes other Louisiana communities and areas in New York and New Jersey that were affected by superstorm Sandy. The 2012 act aims to stabilize the National Flood Insurance Program, while the maps would change flood elevation, both of which could decertify levees and pumps and devastate St. Tammany Parish, Brister says.
