Scientists are working with 3D printers and other technologies to grow hearts, livers, lungs and kidneys for transplantation. Lab-grown organs could ease the shortage of donor organs and reduce the need for patients to take immunosuppressant drugs. Surgeons have already transplanted lab-grown windpipes, bladders, veins and urethras based on patients' own cells. Challenges include collecting the right cells and finding donor cells when the patient's own cells are unusable.
