State and federal lawmakers must embrace alternative ways -- such as fees for miles driven -- to finance the crumbling transportation infrastructure in the U.S., writes Eric Jaffe, author of "The King's Best Highway: The Lost History of the Boston Post Road, the Route That Made America." They should also accept the fact that the "traditional model of transportation funding [via the gas tax] is broken," Jaffe says.
