The FDA has awarded LifeSouth Community Blood Centers a license to manufacture cord blood. The decision makes LifeSouth's program the fifth public cord blood bank in the U.S. to receive such a license. Dr. John R. Wingard, LifeCord's medical director and the leader of the bone marrow transplant program at the University of Florida, said cord blood is a lifesaving treatment for leukemia, lymphoma and other conditions.
