After this week's Supreme Court ruling, President Barack Obama said federal benefits for same-sex couples should apply nationwide, even in the 37 states that do not allow same-sex unions. He said he has directed his administration to "comb through every statute" to see that same-sex couples receive federal benefits. However, Congress might have to pass legislation allowing same-sex spouses to qualify for relevant Social Security and veterans benefits.
