Microbiologist Laura Piddock spearheaded Antibiotic Action under the auspices of the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy to engage the public on the issue of antibiotic-resistant infectious disease and antibiotic development. The U.K.-based group works with groups in other countries to put antibiotic resistance on political agendas, promote funding for new drug discovery and raise public awareness. "If we do not get new treatments to patients within the next 20 years, patients will start dying of bacterial infections in greater numbers than they are today," Piddock said.
