Schools, parents, community organizations and businesses are partnering throughout Kansas City, Mo., to create extended learning programs and keep school libraries open during the summer to help students avoid the summer slide. In a program at Attucks Elementary School, museum workers have come to the school to read a book about chameleons with the students and then help them create artwork. Meanwhile, 10,000 new books recently were distributed locally by nonprofit First Book.
