A combination of a fourth-generation immunoassay and an HIV-1/HIV-2 antibody differentiation test was able to detect acute infections that would have been missed by previous HIV tests, CDC researchers said. These infections were often misclassified as HIV-negative by older methods, "potentially leading to adverse clinical outcomes for patients and further HIV transmission within the community," researchers wrote in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
