Construction starts climbed 5% between April and May, to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $495.7 billion, according to McGraw Hill Construction. The increase has been credited to nonresidential construction, which increased 9%, to an annual rate of $156.4 billion. The gain in construction starts drove the Dodge Index to 105 last month, up from 100 in April.
