Using the New York Department of Education's Autism Spectrum Disorder Nesting model, Neighborhood Charter School of Harlem offers an inclusive environment and special social-skills training. Students in the social-skills class learn how to use a chart to determine whether a situation such as not being called on is worth getting upset about. Educators also use highly structured environments to help manage behaviors. "When kids misbehave or don't do the right thing, it's because we didn't tell them what to do," principal Brett Gallini said. "We sweat the small stuff ... When that structure is there, our kids feel safe."
