Oncologist Dr. James Salwitz, who attended the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine's annual meeting, said most oncologists probably do not have early end-of-life care talks with patients but they should learn to do it because palliative and hospice can can improve quality of life and survival. He said palliative care practitioners also should be sensitive to the goals of oncologists who want to extend life by attacking disease. "These two specialties have a lot to teach each other and patients," he said
