There is no evidence to support the claims of an environmental group in an article in The Chattanoogan that nuclear facilities pose public health risks, writes Ralph Andersen, senior director of radiation safety and environmental protection at the Nuclear Energy Institute. Several scientific bodies, including the American Cancer Society, have disproved reports that nuclear plant radiation has led to cancer and increased mortality rates, he writes. "The nuclear energy industry safely produces large amounts of electricity, and implements multi-layered protective programs that include strict monitoring for radiation within and around the facilities," Andersen writes.
