O&P providers can view the 2011 HHS report alleging questionable billing in the industry and subsequent retroactive requirement for physician documentation as a problem or as an opportunity, writes AOPA's Director of Coding and Reimbursement Services Joseph McTernan. He advises practitioners to ensure that appropriate documentation exists from the start, to engage in continuous communication with physicians and to take the initiative in adopting alternate models of securing documentation. “This situation represents an ideal opportunity to take a big step away from the shadow of being ‘just another device dealer’ and into the realm of health-care providers,” he writes.
