Scientists have discovered the gene that causes a rare muscular disorder called Native American myopathy by studying the embryos of mutant zebrafish. The gene, called STAC3, plays an important role in muscle contractions for the zebrafish and humans, and it is fatal when the gene is not present. The team is working to develop a screening test for chemicals to alleviate the muscle issues and researchers hope the process will lead to treatments for humans with NAM.
