U.S. Navy researchers are working to develop a physics-based model of how cicadas produce their distinctly loud mating call to improve remote sensing underwater, ship-to-ship communications and rescue operations. Scientists understand the basic mechanisms that produce the insect's sound, which can reach up to 100 decibels, but mimicking the cicada's loud call using little power has been difficult. Led by Derke Hughes, a team of researchers at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center will present their findings to the International Congress on Acoustics in Montreal.
