Much of the general wisdom on how to best address the needs of at-risk youth has not changed in recent decades, notes Maurice Elias, a professor at Rutgers University. In this blog post, Elias writes about the book, "Preparing Teachers for Urban Schools," which, when written in 1993, looked back at 30 years of educating at-risk youth. The book advocates for greater preparation for teachers, more compassion and the need to address discontinuity -- all issues that are discussed today, he writes.
