A Russian Earth-mapping satellite launched in July 2012 has ceased operation due to a technical malfunction. Its mission was to map weather patterns and potential oil and benzene spills in the Arctic. The satellite, named Zond-PP, was the first of five mapping orbiters part of the Russian space industry's plan to focus its energy on pioneering Earth-mapping technology and deep space exploration, rather than manned missions.
