A multiphase project to strengthen the ability of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to withstand a magnitude 8.3 earthquake continues. Phase 3A of the work, which includes reinforcing the north anchorage house, is slated to be completed this fall. "The bridge is much stronger than it was 10 years ago, but we still have the work to do on the suspension portion so it will remain standing after a big earthquake," said Ewa Bauer, chief engineer for the bridge.
