While shale natural gas development has both positive and negative effects on bio-based chemical development, the good outweighs the bad, according to chemical industry analysts Katja Salmenkivi and Henna Jaaskelainen. Even though "both aim to reduce the impact of oil price fluctuations and seek lower cost production concepts, bio-based commodity chemicals face a market pull driven by global brand owners and leading retailers, which is non-existent in the conventional chemical value chain," they write. "Which chemicals succeed on a large scale will depend more on technology advancements, availability of funding and market pull rather than developments in shale gas," they add.
