Science and engineering students focused on their studies and careers may question why college-level study of the humanities is required or how the expense and time can be justified. But these studies are vital, writes John Horgan, because while the sciences "give you certainty, the humanities ... give you uncertainty, doubt and skepticism ... [which] is especially important when it comes to claims about humanity, about what we are, where we came from, and even what we can be and should be."
