A new and refined approach to using the century-old light-based microscope technique called Raman spectroscopy has allowed scientists to examine individual molecules in dramatic detail, including bond vibrations between atoms. "For a long time, it seemed like how much spatial resolution that you can actually get with these optical spectroscopic techniques was limited. ... What these authors demonstrated is that they could achieve subnanometer spatial resolution," said University of Colorado physicist Joanna Atkin.
