Twitter's habit of publicly publishing users' follower-counts is "really gross," says Tumblr founder David Karp. It's better to give people some privacy about such things, freeing them up to experiment without shaming them if their ideas don't find a large audience, Karp argues. "Tumblr is not defined by the people you know, it's defined by the stuff that you love," he says.
