The Richmond, Va., city council plans to spend about $200,000 in the next school year to purchase laptop computers and provide Internet access in the fall for sixth-grade students. Eventually, the goal is to provide Internet access to students in all of the city's public schools. For now, however, officials say they are focused on securing private funding to make up the remainder of the estimated $1.35 million needed for the first year of the program.
