Effective instructional practices that make up soundly structured lessons are being overlooked in many classrooms, suggests Mike Schmoker, an author, speaker and consultant. In this commentary, he writes about the importance of delivering lessons that include a learning objective, "modeling" or "demonstrating" of the task and observations of students to ensure they understand. The key to the success of such lessons is the "guided practice" portion, in which teachers monitor understanding, Schmoker writes.
