Software-defined networking has been slow to take off in the campus environment, but observers say that as more OpenFlow devices ship, it's only a matter of time before universities embrace SDN. Given the complexity of university networks -- which support not only student Web access but all manner of administrative and operational tasks -- experts such as Steven Wallace, of the InCNTRE network research center at Indiana University, say SDN can help colleges better manage technology in areas as varied as security cameras and health care services.
