Police in Athens, Ga., used a court order to obtain phone company records of a number used in a prank 9-1-1 call as part of an aggressive effort to reduce the time and resources spent responding to fake emergencies or investigating false information. The initiative has led to charges; in March a judge handed down a three-year sentence to a man who had made multiple prank calls, requiring the first 11 months to be spent behind bars.
