Affluent, health-conscious U.S. consumers are fueling a rise in blueberry, raspberry and blackberry consumption, which is driving growers and researchers to experiment with new berry varieties including acai, aronia and goji berries. Supermarkets' weekly same-store sales of berries rose 18% in the past two years with sales of raspberries, blackberries and blueberries up 31%, 27% and 25% respectively, according to Nielsen.
