Women who drank heavily, including consuming more than five drinks at a time, during their first trimester of pregnancy had a greater chance of having children with lower reading scores than those who did not drink while pregnant, Australian researchers found. They also noted that children of mothers who binge drank in their third trimester were twice as likely to miss grade-level benchmarks for writing. The findings were published in the journal Pediatrics.
