For the past 25 years, students from predominantly poor neighborhoods in the San Jose, Calif., area have improved their math skills during the summer through a local math camp. The Jose Valdes Math Institute, which is now struggling to maintain financial support, is aimed at teaching students a year's worth of math in one summer session, sending them back to school at grade level or above. "I want them to go to college. I don't want any college to tell them they can't get in because they don't know math," program director Julio Pardo said.
