Nuclear energy is emerging as the best option available to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, argues noted climate scientist James Hansen, noting that the industry is working to strengthen reactor designs in the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi incident in Japan. "With the new technologies, they are passively safe in the sense that if there is an anomaly like an earthquake or tsunami or both, it will just shut down and they don't require power to cool them," he said.
