Preferred pharmacy network plans save an average of 6% compared with open plans, and the average savings in the four largest preferred network plans was 8%, according to a CMS analysis of Medicare Part D claims. Pharmacies compete to be included in preferred networks, resulting in lower margins, industry expert Adam Fein notes. The eight preferred-network plans analyzed with lower costs represented 96% of the claims.
