Colleges and universities using hands-on guidance for first-generation, low-income students are seeing an increase in graduation rates for minorities, according to Langston University associate professor Matthew Lynch. However, to increase retention of a diverse faculty, Lynch in this opinion article recommends creating welcoming working environments. "It is not enough for schools to recruit diverse talent; they must cultivate those skills to retain those faculty members long term," Lynch writes.
