EBay plans to acquire London-based delivery provider Shutl as it expands eBay Now, a service for same-day delivery, to 25 markets by the end of 2014. EBay Now is available in New York City and San Francisco.
EBay is expanding its same-day delivery service in the Bay Area and New York City. The online auction and sales site has also upgraded its iPhone app with new payment options and improved product search.
EBay is building technology and retail relationships to eventually provide same-day delivery on a large scale, CEO John Donahoe says. "No one single retailer can do it on their own, so we are building it for the retail industry and using our technology capabilities to build it," he said.
In San Francisco, a team of about 50 couriers is on call to shop at local stores and deliver goods to eBay shoppers within the hour, the latest example of same-day and speedy services by online retailers. Amazon launched limited same-day service in 2009 and has since expanded it to 10 cities.
EBay began inviting San Francisco users to try same-day delivery, which the online retailer is testing with local merchants. Amazon offers same-day delivery in cities including New York, Boston and Seattle.
