A study in the Journal of Medical Internet Research involving 30 participants in the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center's My HealtheVet Pilot showed that allowing patients  access to their electronic health records could enhance patient involvement in their care. Researchers revealed that accessing EHRs improved understanding of health conditions as well as enhanced communication with doctors. "Viewing their records appears to empower patients and enhance their contributions to care, calling into question common provider concerns about the effect of full record access on patient well-being," wrote the authors.
