The demand for primary care physicians helped increase the median first-year guaranteed compensation for family physicians who do not do obstetrics from $163,000 to $170,000 between 2011 and 2012, an MGMA survey showed. Hospitals, as they create accountable care organizations and integrated systems that require primary care physicians, help create competition for doctors among hospitals and private practices, said Kenneth Hertz of MGMA Health Care Consulting Group.
