Farmers are not producing enough food to keep up with demands from a growing global population, according to a study from the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota. Production of maize, rice, wheat and soybeans must increase between 60% and 110% by 2050 to keep up with demand. Currently, yields are expected to increase by between 38% and 67% in that time period. "[I]f investment in agricultural research is not increased significantly, it is very likely that the world will experience major famine in the coming decades," said Hans Braun, director of the Global Wheat Program at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center in Mexico.
