In a preliminary evaluation released on Tuesday, the FDA reported that menthol cigarettes may be more harmful to public health than regular cigarettes. The agency announced that it is seeking public comment on possible regulatory actions instead of making a recommendation on whether the sale of these products should be restricted or banned. There is little evidence that linked the cigarettes to increased disease risk but "adequate data suggest that menthol use is likely associated with increased smoking initiation by youth and young adults," the agency said.
